I get how Google wants to do it, but it will certainly be a pain, and to that extent I think he might not realize how much of an expensive proposition this Nexus would be to produce. So, what I think Google's hoping is that this Nexus 6 will bring in users to the Nexus brand, and bring in the people who will start using it for tablet purposes after it dies. It'll certainly bring in more mainstream people who already have a Nexus, and will give them something to do as an alternative for going back to a Tablet rather than a Full-on Tablet device.
